What Is Self-Testing? The Simple Technique to Tune Into Your Body’s Wisdom
Your body is always talking to you. The question is — are you listening?
Self-testing is a powerful yet simple tool that allows you to tap into your body’s innate intelligence. Often referred to as a form of muscle testing, this technique helps you identify what your body needs, where stress is stored, and which emotions or beliefs may be affecting your health and wellbeing.
Whether you’re new to energy medicine or a long-time practitioner, self-testing offers an accessible way to connect with your body’s subtle signals and receive instant feedback.
What Is Self-Testing?
Self-testing is a method that uses the body’s natural biofeedback to get a yes or no answer to a question. It allows you to assess physical, emotional, and energetic imbalances by observing how your body responds when prompted with certain words, statements or ideas.
This technique is based on the same principles as muscle testing used in kinesiology — where the strength or weakness of a muscle response is used to detect energetic stress. With self-testing, you become your own practitioner, learning to read the body’s cues through gentle movements and intuitive feedback.
The Sway Test: Your Body’s Built-In Compass
One of the most common forms of self-testing is the sway test. It’s incredibly easy to learn, and once practised, it becomes second nature.
Here’s how it works:
Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart. Let your arms rest comfortably by your sides.
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. This helps centre your energy and create a neutral starting point.
Ask your body to show you a ‘yes’. Most people feel a slight forward sway.
Ask your body to show you a ‘no’. You’ll likely feel a gentle backward sway.
From here, you can ask yes/no style questions and observe how your body responds.
This is your body's way of giving feedback based on what feels aligned or misaligned with your system in that moment.
What Can You Ask?
The beauty of self-testing is in its versatility. You can ask about anything, from food choices and supplements to emotions, relationships or energetic blocks.
Examples include:
“Is this feeling I’m carrying mine?”
“Is the emotion I’m feeling connected to feeling unsupported?”
“Is this decision in alignment with my highest good?”
“Is this the priority emotion I need to release today?”
Over time, your confidence builds, and you’ll find yourself using this technique in everyday life to make more intuitive, aligned choices.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Like any skill, self-testing takes a little practice. Here are a few common pitfalls to look out for:
Thinking instead of feeling: If you try to mentally force the answer, you’ll likely block the natural response. Stay neutral and allow your body to guide you.
Overcomplicating the question: Keep your questions simple and phrased for yes/no answers.
Not resetting to neutral: After each question, return to your neutral standing position before asking the next.
Doubting your response: Trust your first response. Overthinking it will only muddy the clarity of your result.
Self-testing is not about being perfect — it’s about building trust in your own body intuition.
Can You Do It Sitting Down?
Absolutely. Once you’ve had some practice, you can self-test in a seated position by observing subtle shifts in your posture or sensations in your body — especially in your chest or gut. Some people feel it in their sternum or their core. The movement may be smaller, but the communication is just as powerful.
Why It Matters
Self-testing is more than just a party trick or wellness hack. It is a gateway to deep self-awareness. By regularly checking in with your body, you develop a more compassionate, intuitive relationship with yourself. You begin to trust your instincts, question your patterns, and make choices that truly serve you.
In the context of energy medicine, this tool helps uncover the emotional root of symptoms and gently guide you toward what needs healing. It's not about diagnosing or replacing professional care, but about taking an active role in your own wellbeing.
Self-testing is one of the simplest ways to access your body’s wisdom.
With practice, it becomes a reliable guide in your daily life — helping you navigate emotions, choices, and energy with greater clarity and confidence.
You don’t need years of training or special equipment. You just need curiosity, consistency and a willingness to listen.
